If you are interested in earning a data science certificate, California State University Fullerton has just announced a new data science certificate program.
The program is entirely online and runs 1 course at a time starting in late February 2015. The 5th and final course should complete sometime in late 2015. Thus, the entire program lasts less than a year. Below are some more details on the program.
What do you need to get into the program?
- Bachelor’s Degree in math, CS, stats, business, science, or other related field
- A couple year’s work experience
What type of people should attend this program?
- Someone intested in transitioning to data science career
- Managers whom wish to better understand data-driven decisions
- Programmers and Statisticians looking to become data scientists
- Analysts looking to move beyond Excel
Full Disclosure: I am a member of the Advisory Board for this program.
Coursera now offers a Data Science Specialization. The courses are taught by Johns Hopkins University. If you would like to earn a Specialization Certificate, each course will cost you $49 otherwise you can take the courses for free without earning the certificate.
Best of all, the first course started this week (April 7, 2014).
The Specialization consists of the following courses. You must complete all courses for the certification. If you are not interested in the certificate, you can take any or all the courses.
- The Data Scientist’s Toolbox
- R Programming
- Getting and Cleaning Data
- Exploratory Data Analysis
- Reproducible Research
- Statistical Interence
- Regression Models
- Practical Machine Learning
- Developing Data Products
- Capstone Project
The Institute for Data Science and Engineering at Columbia University has released their first academic offering. It is a certificate program titled, Certification of Professional Achievement in Data Sciences. The certificate program consists of 4 courses:
- Algorithms for Data Science
- Probability & Statistics
- Machine Learning for Data Science
- Exploratory Data Analysis and Visualization
Columbia is currently accepting applications for the Fall of 2013. Unfortunately, the program will not initially be offered online.
Also, Columbia is planning to start a new master’s degree in data science sometime in 2014. A PhD program is supposed to come sometime after that. Some of the future programs will also be available online. Combined with the data science program at NYU, New York City is becoming a premiere academic location for learning data science.
A virtual information session about the Data Science Certificate Program at the University of Washington is today. If you are interested in the program, it is probably worth your time to attend.
Starting in the fall of 2012, the University of Washington will be offering a certificate in Data Science. The program has two sections: one located in Seattle and the other online. The certificate consists of three separate courses each lasting approximately 3 months. Thus the program can be completed in 9 months, and the cost is around $3000.
There are some information sessions later this summer. If you are in Seattle, there is an information session on July 19. If you are interested in the online program, a webinar is scheduled for August 29.
The program content looks quite good. Some of the topics to be covered include: hadoop, NoSQL, machine learning, statistics, graph algorithms, and more. If you are looking to become a data scientist, this just might be the program for you.
I also added this certificate program to my list of College’s offering data science degrees.
