Although Apache Mahout is not an absolute beginners topic in data science, this slide deck provides a nice overview of machine learning, and it provides some excellent links at the end. In case you are wondering, Mahout is a scalable machine learning library for very large data sets.

These Slides are really good. I am facing problem on putting mahout in action. I have a linux system with hadoop installed but running Mahout on that is causing lots of problems.
Sorry to hear that, I have never actually tried to do that. You may want to try posting some specific questions to stackoverflow or one of the other stackexchange sites.
Are you trying to do development using Mahout as a library? or as a stand-alone packaged jar.
